چکیده

The objective of this study was to identify measures appropriate to estimate travel time reliability and apply them to study the reliability of travel time under varying freeway operating conditions. More specifically, a case study was undertaken to study travel time reliability along the I-65 corridor in the State of Alabama. The objectives of this study were to: a) Calculate reliability metrics using travel time data collected from INRIX for a study corridor, b) Investigate effects of traffic incidents on travel time reliability, and c) Validate the planning time index (PTI) model proposed by SHRP2 L03 project using field data from the study corridor. The findings from the study are expected to advance the understanding of travel time variability under incident and non-incident conditions and assist authorities and transportation agencies in their efforts to improve the planning, design, and operation of transportation facilities. Keywords—Travel time reliability, freeway, non-incident, incident, planning time index, Birmingham, Alabama

The Value of Travel Time and Reliability-Evidence from a Stated Preference Survey and Actual Usage

This research examined travel behavior of Managed Lane (ML) users to better understand the value travelers place on travel time savings and travel time reliability. We also highlight the importance of survey design techniques. These objectives were accomplished through a stated preference survey of Houston’s Katy Freeway travelers. Three stated choice experiment survey design techniques were te...

Uncovering the contribution of travel time reliability to dynamic route choice using real-time loop data

Travel time reliability has generally been surmised to be an important attribute of transportation systems. In this paper, we study the contribution of travel time reliability in travelers’ route choice decisions. Traveler’s route choice is formulated as a mixed-logit model, with the coefficients in the model representing individual traveler’s preferences or tastes towards travel time, reliabil...

Influence of On-Ramp Spacing on Traffic Flow on Atlanta Freeway And Arterial Street System

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of ramp spacing on the traffic flow characteristics on the Atlanta Freeway System and city streets influenced by the freeway. Timelapse photography was used to collect data at four study locations on the freeway. Speed and delay studies were also made on the freeway and surface streets during ramp closure periods and during normal operati...

Evaluation of the Potential Benefits of Advanced Traveler Information Systems

This paper evaluates the potential travel time savings from Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) that provide drivers with travel time and routing information. We classify ATIS in various levels based on the type of information they use to generate guidance and the timing of the dissemination of the generated guidance to drivers. We present a case study that examines the potential trave...
